John (Jack) was born in Camberwell, Surrey, but by 1901 Jack's mother had died and the family had moved to the Manchester area where Jack's father William had been born and grown up. William was a Photographer, following in his father's and elder brother's footsteps, and Jack, aged 6, was living at 45 Granville Road, Rusholme, with 2 sisters, 4 brothers and his maternal aunt and grandmother. By 1911, the family had moved to 11 Alan Road, Withington, and William had married Jack's aunt. Jack was now in his last year at School. In 1910 the House system had been introduced and Jack was allocated to Byrom.
