Ernest was born in 1894 and in 1901 was living at 78 Egerton Road, Fallowfield with mother Ada and two older brothers. By 1911 the family had moved to 6 Piraki Road, off Birchfields Road, Rusholme and Ernest was studying engineering at Manchester University. Ernest was a member of the Manchester University O.T.C and on the outbreak of war enlisted in the 3rd Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.

Sergeant ERNEST WILLIAMSON, Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action on July 20th. He came to the School in 1903 and left for the Manchester School of Technology at midsummer 1910. He was on our second cricket eleven, and took a high place in School. He took his degree of B. Sc. Tech. In the First Division in 1913, at the early age of 20, and gaining a Research Scholarship, took the degree of M. Sc. Tech. in the following year. He was for four years a member of the O. T. C., joined in September, 1914, and went to the front in November, 1915.
An annual prize for Science has been given by Mrs Williamson, in memory of her son, the late Sergeant Ernest Williamson, R F, who fell in action on July 20th, 1916. The memorial is especially appropriate in the case of one who showed such brilliant promise in Science as he did. He took the degree B. Sc. Tech., in the First Division, at the early age of 20, gaining a Research Fellowship, and taking his Masters degree in 1914. He was a member of the Manchester University O T C for four years, and joined the army in 1914.
