James was born in Darwen, Lancashire but by 1891 had moved to to 17 Monton Road, Moss
Side, with father Richard, an Excise Officer with the Inland Revenue, mother Mary, elder sister
Sarah and younger brothers Richard and Leonard and a domestic servant. All three boys
attended School. By 1901 the family had moved to 5 Mitford Street, Fallowfield, and James was
working as a self employed insurance agent, Richard was an articled clerk in a solicitors
office and Leonard was in his last year at School . In 1911 the family was living at Thornfield, 7
Mitford Road, Withington and James was now working as an accountant.

G A, killed in action on June 25,
was at the School from 1891 to
1897. He joined in August, 1916,
and went to the front early in
1917. He was killed whilst on
the way for a stretcher for a
wounded sergeant. He was
very popular with his battery,
and earned the best opinion of
his officers. In civilian life he
had become successful as an
accountant and auditor. His
two younger brothers are both
in the Army.
