William was born on 2 August 1893 in Old Trafford, Manchester. In 1901, aged 7, he was living at 8 Premier Street, Brooks Bar, Stretford, with father William, a buyer of cotton piece goods for a Shipping Merchant, mother Alice, elder brother Frank and sister Doris. By 1911 the family had moved to 28 Darley Road, Whalley Range, Manchester and William, aged 17, was working as an invoice clerk in a Shipping House in Manchester.
William volunteered in November 1914, joining the 21st Royal Fusiliers, Public Schools Batallion, No. 4025, and, after training, proceeding to France on 14th November 1915.
Cartwright, W, Royal Fusiliers, wounded by shrapnel in arms and face on July 30th, is in hospital near Edinburgh, and is making a good recovery.
Private WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT, Royal Fusiliers, killed in action on September 5th,
enlisted in 1914. He was at School from
September, 1905, to July, 1908, and, after
leaving was employed at Messrs Wertheim
Ltd., Princess Street. His elder brother has
been missing since March last.
