Denis was born in Gatley, Cheadle, Cheshire and in 1891, aged 3, was living at 30 Kingston Road, Didsbury with father William, a Linen Agent, mother Jane, older sisters Gertrude and Constance, older brothers Harry and Francis, younger sister Jessie and one domestic servant and a nurse.
Jane died in 1898, aged 47, and by 1901 the family had moved to 41 Holland Road, (now Zetland Road), Chorlton-cum-Hardy. By 1911 the family had moved again to 7 Cranbourne Road, Old Trafford and Denis was working as an Assistant Buyer, presumably in his father's business.

Denis's service records survive and show he enlisted in Manchester in the 3rd City Battalion, Manchester Regiment, (the 18th Manchester Pals) on 4th September 1914 , occupation salesman. He is described as 5 ft 61/2 inches tall, weighing 122 lbs, fresh complexion, brown eyes and dark

hair. He is in the platoon photograph left but it is not known which of the soldiers he is.
