Lance-Corporal H E U BUDGE, signaller Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action on July 20th. He was previously reported missing on that date, and his captain, writing at that time says,“He was my chief signaller in the attack, as he was on many previous occasions, and as usual did splendid work bravely and cheerfully.” He entered the school September 1904, and left midsummer 1909, proceeding to the Manchester University, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. in June 1914. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, going to the front in November 1915. He was in his 24th year and had still another year at the University to finish his course of training as a teacher.

Huyton was born on 9th August 1892 at Old Trafford to Frank Ernest and Janet Anne Budge, he was their only son. He was educated at Abbotsford, in Sale, St. Margaret’s Higher Grade, Hulme Grammar School (1904-1909), and the Princess Street Training College. He gained a County Council Scholarship and a bursary and entered Manchester University in 1911. He was an active member of the University lacrosse club, the Christian Union and attended the Liverpool Students’ Congress as a delegate. He obtained his BSc. shortly before the outbreak of war.
After enlisting on 25th August 1914 Huyton trained at Epsom with the Public Schools Battalion and spent some time as a physical drill instructor before leaving for France in November 1915 where he was killed on 20th July 1916 while acting as a signaller. In a letter to his parents Huyton’s Captain said: “Your son was my chief signaller in the attack, as he was on many previous occasions, and as usual did splendid work, bravely and cheerfully.”
Huyton left effects worth £60 10s. 10d. to his father, an education authority clerk.
