 HUYTON ERNEST ULRIC BUDGE

19 August 1892 - 20 July 1916

At School 1904 - 1909

  L/Cpl 4584 20th Royal Fusiliers

Huyton was born in Stretford, Manchester to father Frank, a cotton broker and mother Janet, living at 73 Richmond Street, Moss Side. In 1901, aged 8, he was living with his Grandparents and Aunts as a pupil at the primary school they ran from an address at Washway Road, Sale. At School Huyton was on the committee of the Phoenix Literary and Debating Society and in his last year represented the School on the lacrosse 1st XII. He was also a member of the Science V Cricket Team, which won the Livesley Shield in 1908. With his family's educational background, it is perhaps hardly surprising that on leaving School he obtained a degree at Victoria (Manchester) University and embarked on a teacher training course at
Princess Street Training College.
On the outbreak of war Huyton enlisted in the 20th Royal Fusiliers, the 3rd (Public Schools) Battalion. The Battalion initially trained at Epsom and Leatherhead and in May 1915 moved to Clipstone Camp near Mansfield and in August to Salisbury Plain for final training before departure for France.
In mid November the Battalion entrained to Folkestone and on the 14th crossed the Channel to France, landing at Calais and then moving to rest camp in Boulogne.

THE HULMEIAN - December 1916

Lance-Corporal H E U BUDGE, signaller Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action on July 20th. He was previously reported missing on that date, and his captain, writing at that time says,“He was my chief signaller in the attack, as he was on many previous occasions, and as usual did splendid work bravely and cheerfully.” He entered the school September 1904, and left midsummer 1909, proceeding to the Manchester University, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. in June 1914. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, going to the front in November 1915. He was in his 24th year and had still another year at the University to finish his course of training as a teacher.

Biography Manchester University

Huyton was born on 9th August 1892 at Old Trafford to Frank Ernest and Janet Anne Budge, he was their only son. He was educated at Abbotsford, in Sale, St. Margaret’s Higher Grade, Hulme Grammar School (1904-1909), and the Princess Street Training College. He gained a County Council Scholarship and a bursary and entered Manchester University in 1911. He was an active member of the University lacrosse club, the Christian Union and attended the Liverpool Students’ Congress as a delegate. He obtained his BSc. shortly before the outbreak of war.

After enlisting on 25th August 1914 Huyton trained at Epsom with the Public Schools Battalion and spent some time as a physical drill instructor before leaving for France in November 1915 where he was killed on 20th July 1916 while acting as a signaller. In a letter to his parents Huyton’s Captain said: “Your son was my chief signaller in the attack, as he was on many previous occasions, and as usual did splendid work, bravely and cheerfully.”

Huyton left effects worth £60 10s. 10d. to his father, an education authority clerk.
