Robert was born in Moss Side, Manchester and in 1891, aged 7, was living at Ash Villa, 116 Burton Road, with father Robert, a Buyer and Salesman in the Textile Industry, mother Hannah, older sisters Florence, Beatrice, Lille and Miriam, elder brother Edward and younger brother John. Edward was also a Hulmeian and also died in the war.
By 1901, Robert had left School and was working as a clerk in the Cotton Industry. Robert's father died in 1906 by which time the family had moved to 33 Lingard Road, Northenden. In 1911 the three boys were still living at home, Robert now working as an assistant buyer for a Shipper, Edward working as a bank clerk and John as an Electrical Engineer.
Robert's body was never recovered or identified and he is remembered on Panel 11 of the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, situated about 10 kilometres south east of Arras on the main road between Arras and Cambrai.
