Herbert was born in Wandsworth, London and in 1901, aged 3, was living at 6 Cromford Road, Wandsworth with father Thomas, Bank Accountant and mother Edith. By 1911 Thomas had been promoted to Bank Manager and moved to Manchester, the family living at 31 Manley Road, Whalley Range , with the addition of younger son Arthur and a domestic servant. At School Herbert was in Dalton House and appears to have been an accomplished athlete, winning the 100 yards under 14 in 1911 and the under 15 hurdles in 1912. He also represented the School on the 2nd XII Lacrosse team and Dalton at senior lacrosse and cricket. In 1912 the family moved back to London and Herbert aged 14 then went to the City of London School.
Herbert attested at Wandsworth on 11 January 1916 aged 18 years 1 month, height 5ft 9 1/4 ins and weighing 147 lbs. He was transferred to the Army Reserve until 11 May 1916, when he was called up to the Honourable Artillery Company at Finsbury. After training, Herbert proceeded overseas to France, landing at Le Havre on

12 May 1917, to join the 8th Infantry Base Depot. These Base Depots received men on arrival from England and kept them in training while they awaited posting to a unit at the front. On 1 June 1917, Herbert was posted to 2nd HAC, joining them in the field on 8 June 1917.
Gunner H OWEN JONES, Hon Artillery Company, killed in action on October 9, was at the School from April, 1910 to July, 1912, when he went to the City of London School. He will be well remembered by old Dalton boys.
